    Home defense rounds.

I have been looking into 12 and 20 gauge home defense rounds. I have found a series of strange rounds from square pellets to rock salt and even ball an chain (like the kind used to destroy sales and masts). I pretty sure ball and chain is impractical but I like the idea of square shot. It designed for a short range max spread. My primary concern is penetration since I'm not deciding how and where contact is made. All bedrooms are upstairs but it is a duplex and I would hate to shoot a neighbor

I just keep Winchester Supreme copper plater double ought buck loaded, but I don't live in extremely close proximity to the neighboring houses.

If I were looking for a shotgun round that has little possibility of over penetration through walls, I would look at light target loads with the smallest shot I can find. I believe that Federal and Winchester have reduced target loads loaded with #8 shot. A direct hit at across the room distances would still be devastating, but such small shot loses it's power rather quickly.

I would also consider a less lethal rubber slug or bean bag round if it were to be fired from a pump or break action shotgun. Still effective on target at close range, yet unlikely to kill a neighbor through a wall.

actually, if you want to drop to game shot, either #4 or #6 shot would do fine... especially on the low penetration.

Thanks all. I never even considered rubber slug. But for $11 a 3 pack and how infrquently I hope to use it it might be worth a neighbors life.

Btw. I found a site that offers hollow shot. It supposed to have amazing short range takedown with minimum penetration.

If you had my neighbors, you'd be wanting to get 3 1/2" Magnum Slugs.
