What`s up, trip to the range

Went to the range today after getting my new ejector. Just took Win hollow point and
Hornaday Critical. Didn`t want to shoot the hollow point at all. The Hornaday Shot
much better than last time only 1 rd had to be helped into the chamber. Slap on the back.
Now the million dollar question. Does anybody else have trouble with the shell casings
hitting them in the face and head?? I mean every shot almost.

LOL...pretty darned normal. Not laughing at you, just remembering my last range visit. I had a couple of nice marks on my face from both my P3AT and P32.

I may be the exception to the rule but, neither of our P-3AT's eject to the head or face of either myself or my wife with any regularity. It may be ammo dependent. We practice with Speer Lawman and usually carry Golden Sabers. We usually shoot up the magazine of carry ammo during a session but otherwise it's the Speer ammo on a regular basis. I have also shot Federal American Eagle and the ancient Santa Barbara without difficulty . . . until one of use relaxes the grip too much allowing the gun to rotate and pop the ejected cases toward the head. Watch your grip, especially late in the session when you get tired, even if you don't feel tired.

Oh, and we are both right handed shooters. Lefties are more likely to be in the stream of the ejections that come out the right side and angle back at about 30 degrees for us.

    Best of luck . . .

I`m thinking this really didn`t start till I replaced the Extractor,Extractor Spring and Recoil Spring Assembly.
I noticed the new spring was longer ,would that have anything to do with it?

Did you keep the old parts? If so, put them back in, one at a time to see which is contributing to the issue.

Also, make sure your extractor spring is snugged down with no dirt of gunk under it to reduce the grip. Be careful not to twist it off, but loose extractor springs create odd behavior.

I would probably put the old recoil spring back in as the first test. If that cures it, you can probably expect the new spring to stop causing the issue once it takes a set after enough rounds fired. That presumes you used a standard spring, rather than a higher power Wolff brand spring. If you upped the spring weight with a Wolff, you probably know what to do next.

Oh, and Kel-Tec will probably send you a replacement spring with just a phone call. They are way too nice about stuff like that, even though it really is a wear item.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes, please!

The spring I have were from Kel-Tec. They did send me the wrong Ejector. They sent me the GEN2,I have a GEN1.
Is the spring in Gen 2 longer than the Gen1?

I believe the recoil springs are exactly the same.

Most of the operating geometry did not change from Gen1 to Gen2, just the external shape of the slide and the design of the ejector. As I understand it, the newer slide shape is a cost saving move both in machining operations and the cost of the bar stock. The extractor may be less expensive to build as well. I don't know.

Still, your new spring will be noticeably stronger than the spring it replaced, presuming the original had some rounds on it. At least, that has been my experience when changing P-3AT recoil springs. I've only done it a few times. They last quite a while. For me, a sort of leisurely return to battery is the signal to change. Admittedly, I have never had a failure I could attribute to a worn spring.
