actually, the gun was designed for the polymer rod. The polymer requires no lube, and flexes with the cam action when the barrel lug drops as the slide retracts. Many folks that switch to the metal rods begin having timing problems as well as excessive wear at the interface of the rod with the slide port. I don't think I've ever heard of a polymer guide rod failure in a KT pistol, but I guess anything is possible. Personally, I would suspect there's been more damage done to KT pistols when the polymer rod was switched out for metal than there have been failures from poly guide rods.
Everyone has to make their own descisions though
